Pamukkale, meaning 'cotton castle', is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Turkey renowned for its dazzling white travertine terraces and shallow thermal pools cascading down a hillside. Atop the plateau lies Hierapolis, an ancient Roman spa city with remarkably preserved ruins. It is one of Turkey's most iconic destinations, best visited in late spring before the summer heat and crowds peak.
Late spring and early summer offer pleasant temperatures before the fierce summer heat, and the pools are more likely to be full of water. Summers are fiercely hot with no shade and dazzling white glare, while winter means cold barefoot ascents through the cascades.
